Wisconsin Dells

We Found the Perfect Weekend Escape From Chicago, And Yes, It’s Wisconsin Dells

When you’re craving a weekend getaway from Chicago that feels fun, easy, and genuinely relaxing, without flights or overplanning, Wisconsin Dells quietly checks every box. What started as a casual trip quickly turned into one of our favorite couples getaways from Chicago. Just a few hours away (and even easier thanks to Amtrak), Wisconsin Dells feels like a true reset without the stress of long travel days. Once you arrive, it’s clear why it’s known as the The Waterpark Capital of the World!® and why it offers so much more beyond that title.

Our cabin was directly on the river with stunning views!

Cozy Cabins, River Views, and Slowing Down (@cedarlodgedells)

We stayed in the coziest cabin at Cedar Lodge & Settlement which overlooked the river and immediately set the tone for the weekend. Morning coffee outside, peaceful views, and the kind of quiet you forget exists when you live in a city. It felt private and relaxing, yet still close to everything - perfect for a couples weekend getaway.

Waterparks Are a Must (Obviously)

No trip to Wisconsin Dells is complete without waterparks. We spent time at Wilderness Resort, and between the slides, lazy rivers, and pools, it’s impossible not to feel like a kid again. It’s fun, chaotic in the best way, and surprisingly perfect for couples looking to unplug and lean into the nostalgia. Even after a full day at the waterpark, we still felt like we’d only scratched the surface.

Aquavia Lumina, But Make It Magical  (@aquavialumina)

One of the standout moments of the trip was walking through Aquavia Lumina. After dark, the trail transforms into a glowing, immersive night walk filled with lights, sound, and storytelling. It was peaceful, surreal, and unexpectedly romantic, one of those experiences you slow down for. It’s the perfect balance to a high-energy day and a must-do for couples visiting Wisconsin Dells.

Mountain Coaster Thrills (@wisconsindellsmountaincoaster)

For a little adrenaline, we headed to the Wisconsin Dells Mountain Coaster. Flying through the trees, controlling your speed, and laughing the entire way down made it an instant favorite. It’s equal parts thrilling and ridiculous, in the best way.

Spa Days + Golf Days = Everyone Wins (@sunmountainspa, @trappersturngolf)

One of the reasons Wisconsin Dells works so well for couples is that you don’t have to do everything together. While the guys hit the golf course at Trappers Turn Gold Club (there are so many great golf options in the area), we booked massages at Sun Mountain Spa. Quiet, relaxing, and indulgent without being over-the-top, it was exactly what the weekend needed and balanced out the busier days perfectly.

Dining That’s Worth the Trip Alone (@delbarsupperclub, @sarentosatthewilderness)

The food scene genuinely impressed us. From classic supper club vibes at The Del-Bar to dinner at Sarento’s Coffee - Cafe on the River, every meal felt elevated without feeling stuffy. Add in cozy coffee stops like Bella Goose Coffee, and meals quickly became part of the experience - not just something squeezed between activities.
